Someone once said that We Mythical Kings are the Neptunes of the country-drone genre and while that said person is probably mythical themselves, they may well have a point. Mystery men Corn Capri and Mwandishi II make broke-beat meets finger picking banjos meets eighties synth pop meets weirdo drone....all with a country twang.
The Déjà vu four track EP is a roasted hash brown of almost there, yet not too perfect first takes and mayhemic improvisations around shady yet catchy songs. This time the duo have collaborated with Fence Collective folk singer extraordinaire Little Pebble who brings his sweet, sweet tones and melodies to the bones of these tunes. He sings about drunks on buses, the elements and falling in love yet again - you’ll rarely hear a voice so honest.
Guitars, organs, synths, dulcimers, accordions, banjos, blues harps, beat boxes and random percussion were all thrown down to 8 tracks in a couple of days without really knowing where they were going and the tracks were mixed with a tank load of reverb just like in them olden days. Lightnin’ Rod Jackson from Manchester’s Keyboard Rebel also plays drums and horns on a couple of the tracks.
The EP tracks are Déjà vu (I’m in love), Trapped on the 22, Stumped and Dröne 136. Hear the MP3 edits below.
The other two tracks are from an unreleased single. Plastic Bag is made up of spanish guitar, FM synths, dulcimer, analogue synths and features the fine vocals of Ben Evans from Autopilot. Sheep Walking is a freeform mandolin expose with a scattering of mood enhancing 80's synthesizers and will be on the forthcoming Timbreland Compilation.
