Imagine arriving in The Netherlands‚ 5th largest city, renowned as the techno capital of Europe, only to find a peculiar Pleasantville that turns into a ghost-town by 7pm; a city only because DAF and Philips had swelled the numbers of 5 neighbouring villages until the powers that be decreed more bureaucracy necessary. An area subjected to so many disputes, devastations and invasions it could be forgiven for thinking it's Belgian; so famously laidback you can be a quarter of an hour late without causing serious offence - at only two hours from Amsterdam, it could not be further displaced in character.
But come Thursday night the town is packed with students from all over the continent, Friday & Saturday the centre is packed with cycles and the main drag looks like a scene from Ibiza Uncovered! Though even during those moments of excess the empty beer can on the streets is kicked with an air of obligation and detachment; the squat party is so quiet you can hold a conversation in front of the stack; and the forest rave is guaranteed to be shut down as you're on your way there.
The only thing to do is creep down the corridors of nature that crisscross the suburbia, searching for respite, to let go what you knew, absorb and radiate what you now feel around you. Oh yeah, and meet the woman you'll wed.
